We envision a resilient and self-sustaining Lesotho where communities thrive through sustainable agriculture.
About us
The Machobane Agricultural Development Foundation (MADF) is a pivotal organisation in Lesotho dedicated to combating poverty and enhancing agricultural sustainability through the Machobane Farming System (MFS). MADF leverages MFS, a comprehensive and innovative farming approach developed in the 1940s, renowned for its sustainable, low-input, and organic methodologies that are intricately adapted to Lesotho’s unique environmental challenges. By promoting MFS among farmers and communities, MADF aims to increase agricultural productivity and resilience, ensuring food security and enabling rural populations to overcome economic vulnerabilities. The foundation's efforts encompass a wide range of activities including education and training for both children and adults, the development of accessible educational materials, the introduction of improved composting methods, and collaborative projects with various stakeholders to spread sustainable practices. Through these initiatives, MADF seeks to empower local communities, reduce poverty, and transform Lesotho’s agricultural landscape into a model of sustainability and resilience. What We Do: Training & Mentorship: Providing extensive training in the Machobane Farming System, focusing on sustainable, low-input, and organic methodologies. Research & Development: Advancing agricultural practices through continuous innovation and adaptation to climate change. Community Empowerment: Fostering community engagement and resilience, emphasising education, conservation, and self-reliance. Advocacy for Sustainable Policies: Influencing agricultural policy to integrate sustainable practices at a national level. Join us on our journey to transform Lesotho through sustainable agriculture. Get in touch to learn how you can support our cause or collaborate with us in making a lasting impact.

🌍 Empowering Health Through Tradition 🍲 In Lesotho, the rise of ultra-processed foods is reshaping diets and health outcomes, contributing to skyrocketing rates of diabetes and other lifestyle diseases. Amidst this challenge, Mosotho chef Ska Moteane is leading an inspiring movement to reconnect with our roots. Her story, featured in African Arguments, sheds light on the profound value of our traditional cuisine—not just as a cultural treasure but as a powerful tool for promoting health and sustainability. Ska’s work celebrates dishes like Likhets’o and Nyekoe, which are simple, affordable, and packed with nutrition. These meals reflect a food system deeply rooted in the environment and community, offering a stark contrast to processed foods that dominate modern diets. By educating communities—especially young people—about the health risks of processed foods and the benefits of local dishes, she is addressing the dual crises of malnutrition and lifestyle-related illnesses. Her advocacy is a call to action: to value what is local, embrace what is traditional, and resist the pressures of industrial food systems. Ska’s work reminds us that traditional food is not just a relic of the past—it is a pathway to a healthier, more sustainable future. At MADF, we share this vision. Through the Machobane Farming System, we encourage the cultivation of traditional crops like sorghum, beans, and pumpkins, ensuring year-round food security and promoting healthy, balanced diets. Let’s celebrate Ska’s incredible efforts and reflect on how we can all contribute to preserving Lesotho’s culinary heritage and protecting our health. The annual Agricultural Market Show in Maseru, marked by the presence of FAO Director-General QU Dongyu, was a proud moment for Lesotho, celebrating not only the country's bicentennial but also its enduring agricultural heritage. While the event highlighted essential strides in market access, innovation, and public-private partnerships, it also brings to light areas where progress is still crucial. At MADF, we recognise that while showcasing and celebrating achievements is important, true advancement requires a critical look at persistent challenges. For smallholder farmers, access to resources, modern technology, and continuous education remain as major hurdles. The FAO’s initiatives, such as the Digital Village project, signal a promising path forward, aiming to bridge the digital divide in rural areas. The practical application of such programs needs vigilant monitoring to ensure they reach the grassroots and do not remain abstract ideals. For many in the farming community, innovation must be matched with inclusivity and adaptability, especially given the socio-economic realities they face. As we honour 200 years of Lesotho’s journey, let’s remember that change is driven by sustained, collaborative efforts that address both the celebration and the challenge of agricultural progress. The work of empowering farmers must continue with consistent policy support, community engagement, and scalable innovations that truly benefit those at the core of our food systems. A Historic First for MADF! 🌍 This past Saturday, we hosted our first-ever virtual session at MADF – and what an incredible milestone it was! 🎉 We were joined by Maleballo Mokhathi, who is currently pursuing a degree in Gastronomic Sciences and Cultures in Italy. Together, we explored the transformative Machobane Farming System, its roots, and its potential to shape sustainable agricultural practices and healthy diets globally. The discussion was both enriching and empowering, bridging the gap between traditional knowledge and sustainable farming practices. 🌾✨ This session marks the beginning of something exciting at MADF – leveraging technology to connect, learn, and grow across borders. 🌐 🎙️ We’ll be sharing a podcast version of the session soon, so stay tuned for the insights and stories shared. #MADF #MFS #SustainableFarming #MachobaneFarmingSystem #GastronomicSciences #InnovationInAgriculture #VirtualConnections #CommunityGrowth #StayTuned #Agriculture #Farming #Lesotho #ClimageChange #FarmingSystems

The science behind MFS introduces our next very important aspect to the system: Soil pH & Understanding Manure/Ash Mixes for Different Soil Types 🌱 Why does Soil pH Matter? Soil pH matters because it determines how easily plants can absorb essential nutrients. Understanding soil pH is crucial to ensuring your crops absorb the nutrients they need to thrive. Each crop has its ideal pH range, and adjusting the balance of manure and ash is essential for optimal growth. Soil health is the foundation for a thriving harvest. Check out how MFS crops flourish under various pH levels and the ideal manure/ash mixes to maximize growth (Detailed table on the second slide). 🌾🌻 #SoilScience #MFS #SoilpH #SustainableFarming #ManureAshMix #SoilHealth #Agriculture #CropYield #FarmManagement #Lesotho #Farming

Machobane Agricultural Development Foundation reposted this
Healthy diet management is achievable with this variety of crops. If we can produce these within an annual cropping cycle in our environment, this would be commendable! I find understanding the science behind MFS very useful and helpful.
Our selection of crops—potatoes, beans, maize, sorghum, wheat, peas, and pumpkin, along with additional options like watermelon, broad beans, and sunflower—is grounded in rich historical knowledge and thorough research. Each crop was meticulously chosen for its proven benefits to both the soil and the people, blending traditional wisdom with modern sustainability practices. These crops are integral to enhancing soil health, increasing soil fertility, and providing essential nutrients, all while preserving the environment for future generations. Check out our infographic, which delves into the specific soil benefits and health benefits of each crop, showcasing how MFS is advancing sustainable agriculture for healthier & thriving communities. #MachobaneFarmingSystem #SustainableAgriculture #SoilHealth #AgriculturalInnovation #SoilFertility #EcoFriendlyFarming #AgroSustainability #SustainableFarmingPractices #Lesotho #Farming #Agriculture
