We envision a resilient and self-sustaining Lesotho where communities thrive through sustainable agriculture.

About us

The Machobane Agricultural Development Foundation (MADF) is a pivotal organisation in Lesotho dedicated to combating poverty and enhancing agricultural sustainability through the Machobane Farming System (MFS). MADF leverages MFS, a comprehensive and innovative farming approach developed in the 1940s, renowned for its sustainable, low-input, and organic methodologies that are intricately adapted to Lesotho’s unique environmental challenges. By promoting MFS among farmers and communities, MADF aims to increase agricultural productivity and resilience, ensuring food security and enabling rural populations to overcome economic vulnerabilities. The foundation's efforts encompass a wide range of activities including education and training for both children and adults, the development of accessible educational materials, the introduction of improved composting methods, and collaborative projects with various stakeholders to spread sustainable practices. Through these initiatives, MADF seeks to empower local communities, reduce poverty, and transform Lesotho’s agricultural landscape into a model of sustainability and resilience. What We Do: Training & Mentorship: Providing extensive training in the Machobane Farming System, focusing on sustainable, low-input, and organic methodologies. Research & Development: Advancing agricultural practices through continuous innovation and adaptation to climate change. Community Empowerment: Fostering community engagement and resilience, emphasising education, conservation, and self-reliance. Advocacy for Sustainable Policies: Influencing agricultural policy to integrate sustainable practices at a national level. Join us on our journey to transform Lesotho through sustainable agriculture.
