In 2020, about one fifth of total road freight transport in the EU will be carried by empty vehicles. The share is slightly higher for national traffic (24%) than for general traffic (20%) and significantly higher compared to international traffic (13%). Convoy company conducted a survey in which 69% of respondents said that reducing empty mileage is very important to their business. And it's no wonder, as you're either working or wasting time and resources. Convoy boasted that it had managed to reduce empty mileage from an industry standard 35% to 19% using automated reboot. So 20% of the EU average looks pretty good. Moreover, the 1/5 indicator in the EU has been relatively stable over the last decade. 20% is the EU average, but there are some regional differences. In the 17 EU member countries, the share of empty vehicle mileage ranged from 15% to 30%. The share in Cyprus was much higher at 40.4%, which probably indicates that most of the road freight traffic is either goods imported through ports or construction traffic, both of which involve empty trips in one of the two directions. Empty road freight rates in Greece (35.8%), Ireland (35.6%) and Austria (34.2%) are also well above the EU average. At the other extreme are Denmark with 8.7% of empty vehicle kilometers traveled and Belgium with 10.9%. In the world of trucking, every kilometer has a price and can have an impact on the economy and efficiency of the industry. Let's take a look at the figures and facts about empty kilometers nationally and internationally. The share of empty vehicle transportation is slightly higher for national transportation (24%) than for general transportation (20%) and significantly higher compared to international transportation (13%). In almost all EU countries, the share of empty kilometers in national transportation was higher than for international trips. It is also interesting to note that in several countries the share of empty mileage in international transportation exceeded 20%: in Austria - 23.5%, Luxembourg - 22.7%, the Netherlands - 22.4%, France - 21.5% and Ireland - 20.5%. This is significantly higher than the EU average of 13%! We estimated the average empty mileage distance in 2022 based on EU statistics (total kilometers per number of trips with and without cargo) and found out that the average empty trip length was 56 km (48 nationally or 196 internationally). In comparison, the average distance of a loaded trip was 131 km (93 and 592 km respectively). Another thing to mention is that empty kilometers are much more common in national shipments: there are 1.6 loaded trips for every 1 empty trip, and 2.3 for international trips! The ability to receive cargo for return trips in international transportation is certainly of great economic importance. But unfortunately, still a huge number of vehicles travel long distances without passengers or cargo. This leads to excessive fuel use, pollution and unnecessary wear and tear on the roads.
