Ostrava in Czechia reinvents itself with a state-of-the-art concert hall and House of Culture, transforming the city into a modern metropolis with a vibrant cultural sector. The concert hall, designed by architect Steven Holl, mimics the organic shapes of a musical instrument case, a tribute to the transformative power of music and its deep connection to Ostrava’s identity. We are proud to support this project with €84 million loan. This initiative will: 🟠 Provide a new home for the renowned Janáček Philharmonic, blending world-class acoustics with historical preservation 🟠 Host cultural and educational activities, creating a vibrant space alive with music, theatre, and learning opportunities 🟠 Reinforce Ostrava’s place on Europe’s cultural map, transitioning the city into a modern metropolis with a flourishing arts sector This project also benefits from EU funding through the Just Transition Mechanism, paving the way for sustainable urban development in this dynamic Czech city. The technology unlocks smarter solutions for everyday devices, enabling innovations like: 🔵 Smartwatches that monitor blood glucose in real-time. 🔵 Refrigerators that alert you when food is about to spoil. 🔵 Tools to measure air and water quality with precision. Vienna consistently ranks as the world’s most liveable city—and innovative projects like Nordbahnhof showcase why.   The Nordbahnhof district, developed on 85 hectares of former freight yards, offers thousands of affordable apartments in a prime location. Central to Austria’s approach is the concept of Limited-Profit Housing Associations, which provide rental accommodations at rates typically 25% below market value.   We are contributing to affordable housing solutions thanks to our 30-year partnership with Erste Bank und Sparkasse, leading to the construction of over 6,800 new affordable homes in the country. As we begin this new year, we look forward to a healthier future with cleaner water and fewer harmful chemicals.   We are proud to support Europe’s fight against chemical pollution with a €22.5 million loan to Swedish cleantech innovator Chromafora.   This funding will: 🔵 Advance the development of SELPAXT, a cutting-edge technology for removing PFAS (“forever chemicals”) from water. 🔵 Support deployment of compact, container-based water-treatment units across Europe, starting in Sweden and Belgium.   💧 Why it matters: PFAS contamination poses serious risks to human health, including links to cancer and developmental disorders. These persistent pollutants have been detected in water, soil, and food across Europe, creating an urgent need for sustainable solutions.   As the EU Climate Bank, we are committed to driving solutions for cleaner water and a sustainable future, aligned with the European Green Deal and InvestEU priorities. As we begin this new year, we continue our unwavering support for Ukraine through the Ukraine Recovery Programme, providing another €55 million in EU guarantee-supported funding. This will enable: 🔵 Restoration of schools, kindergartens, hospitals, and social housing 🔵 Improvement of heating, water, and waste systems 🔵 Reconstruction of critical social infrastructure across 12 oblasts  In 2024, several projects were completed, including: ✅ A sewer pressure collector in Zhmerynka, Vinnytsia Oblast, benefiting 33,000+ residents with enhanced sanitation and reliable wastewater management. ✅ A water supply facility in Bucha, Kyiv Oblast. ✅ Two schools in Vinnytsia Oblast. ✅ A paediatric infectious disease department in Zhytomyr Oblast. This programme, implemented by Ukraine’s Ministry for Development of Communities and Territories, comprises 151 recovery subprojects fully managed by the local authorities of participating communities, with technical assistance from UNDP Ukraine.
