🎤 The transition towards sustainable finance and addressing the challenges it presents requires collaboration across sectors and disciplines. In particular, integrating scientific research with sustainable finance practices and bridging existing gaps is essential. This month, we interviewed Andrew Ferrone, Deputy Director for Climate and Sustainable Development at the Luxembourg Ministère de l'Environnement, du Climat et de la Biodiversité and Chair of the LSFI Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). We discussed the link between science and sustainable finance, the objectives of the SAB, how scientists and financial professionals can collaborate more effectively to drive sustainability, and the biggest challenges in aligning the financial sector with the latest scientific understanding of sustainability-related topics. 🌏 Today, we celebrate Human Rights Day! Human Rights Day is observed annually around the world on 10 December to commemorate the anniversary of one of the world's most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). ❓ What is the #UDHR? - This document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. - It was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 and sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected. - It is a global blueprint for international, national, and local laws and policies and a bedrock of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. - It is available in 577 languages, from Abkhaz to Zulu, making the UDHR the most translated document in the world. This year’s theme is ‘Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now‘, which focuses on how human rights are a pathway to solutions, playing a critical role as a preventative, protective, and transformative force for good. Sustainable finance is key to advancing human rights by directing capital toward initiatives that foster social well-being, economic equality, and environmental protection. ➡️ Wondering how to integrate human rights into investment decisions? 🚀 The Luxembourg Sustainable Finance Study 2024 is out! This study, developed by the Luxembourg Sustainable Finance Initiative in collaboration with PwC Luxembourg, marks the 3rd edition in its series and provides a picture of the state of sustainable finance in Luxembourg. It examines core ESG strategies adopted by mutual funds in Luxembourg and it looks, for the first time, at ESG strategies within private markets and stewardship activities of Luxembourg players. The study also offers other key updates, including SFDR PAI reporting, the use of the voluntary European ESG Template, climate-related affiliations embraced by Luxembourg market participants as well as an overview of key sustainable finance players in Luxembourg. ❓What are some of the findings of this edition? - Rebound in ESG funds: ESG funds in Luxembourg saw a 12.3% rebound in AuM; - Retail investors drive ESG inflows: Retail investors showed interest in ESG UCITS funds, pouring in €12.6bn of net flows during H1 2024. Institutional investors, on the other hand, withdrew €7.8bn during the same period; - SFDR: The majority (68%) of the AuM of Luxembourg-domiciled UCITS corresponds to funds disclosing as per Article 8 of the SFDR, followed by 27% for Article 6 and 4% for Article 9; - Growth of ESG private market funds: The growth of ESG private market funds domiciled in Luxembourg has been remarkable, achieving a CAGR of 95.2% from 2019 to 2023; - Private equity dominates ESG private markets: Private equity ESG funds accounted for €267.5bn in AuM, followed by infrastructure (€188.9bn), real estate (€107.7bn), and private debt (€58.7bn) in 2023; - PAI reporting: Of 440 financial market participants surveyed, 106 have published a report on the Principal Adverse Impacts (PAIs) of their investment decisions, while 195 have issued an explanation as to why they do not consider PAIs. The Luxembourg financial centre appears well-positioned to continue being a leading international hub for sustainable finance, as players are expected to capitalise on the latest and upcoming policy and regulatory developments. However, continued efforts are required to bridge existing gaps, particularly when it comes to data quality and standardisation, as well as assessing the impact of sustainable finance investments.
