The Minett UNESCO Biosphere is the first and only biosphere reserve in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It has been recognized as part of the UNESCO “Man and the Biosphere” program since October 2020. The biosphere is a member of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, which includes 727 biosphere reserves. biosphere in 131 countries. The objective of the biosphere is to preserve the post-industrial biodiversity of the region, to raise awareness of the importance of the natural wealth, and to promote and actively support the sustainable development of the entire region. Administratively, the Minett UNESCO Biosphere is managed by the PRO-SUD intermunicipal syndicate. PRO-SUD is the regional union of municipalities for the promotion and development of the South Region. The 11 member municipalities (Bettembourg, Differdange, Dudelange, Esch/Alzette, Käerjeng, Kayl, Mondercange, Pétange, Rumelange, Sanem, Schifflange) together form the first Luxembourg biosphere reserve. PRO-SUD works with its partners to implement territorial strategies of intermunicipal interest and to raise awareness and improve the living environment of the inhabitants of the southern region of Luxembourg.
