Exploring the human brain
À propos
The LCSB combines expertise from a broad spectrum of disciplines to study the brain and its diseases. Our research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. When do they start to develop? What is the role of genetics? How are they influenced by lifestyle, diet or environment? How do all these factors interact? How can we slow down the progression of neurodegenerative diseases or even prevent them? We are tirelessly searching for answers, for the benefit of patients. Despite tremendous progress in medicine in the last decade, doctors are still unable to treat many brain diseases at their cause. The reason? We have not yet understood in detail how these diseases arise. Particularly as the earliest changes in the brain happen decades before any clinical symptoms appear. The human body is a complex biological system in constant interplay with the environment. The LCSB aims to shed light on this complexity and to gain a mechanistic understanding of the brain and neurodegenerative disease processes. We want to use the resulting knowledge to develop new ways to diagnose, prevent and treat neurodegenerative disorders, like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Parkinson’s disease involves a complex range of motor and non-motor symptoms, complicating diagnosis and treatment. A recent study, led by Assistant Prof. Enrico Glaab, used data from the Luxembourg Parkinson’s Study to explore an integrated approach combining digital gait sensors, metabolomics, and clinical data to classify disease outcomes and comorbidities. Powered by advanced machine learning, the study highlights how integrating these complementary data types can allow clinicians in earlier detection and better monitoring of Parkinson's symptoms. https://lnkd.in/eWeBpuwW #ParkinsonsDisease #HealthcareInnovation #MachineLearning #DigitalHealth

The pdp Braincoach app launched by Programme for Dementia Prevention was recently featured on RTL TV! 🧠📱 This innovative app helps users reduce dementia risks through personalized recommendations for healthier living. "According to current scientific knowledge, there are 14 modifiable risk factors. If those get addressed, up to 45% of all dementia cases could be prevented in the future," says Prof Rejko Krüger, coordinator of pdp. Let’s make prevention a priority! The app is available for free in Luxembourg in both in App store and Google Play or at www.pdp-app.lu. https://lnkd.in/eTUGuSxA

During the Researchers' Days (28 - 30 November), the Rockhal will transform into a hub for science, offering hands-on experiments, personal insights, and a closer look at groundbreaking research 🎉 28 and 29 November are reserved for schools, but on 30 November we are open to everyone from 10:00 to 19:00! 🌟 The LCSB will wait for you at in the main hall (booth 31)! Learn more about rare diseases that affect millions of people around the world: Observe samples under a microscope, investigate the effect of genetic mutations, experiment with enzymes and discover how scientists search for new treatments. The Scienteens Lab will also be in the main hall (WS32), with a booth on how smartphones recognise faces or QR codes: Observe an electronic brain at work, be part of a human neural network and perform the basic calculations to experiment with how a computer detects a line in an image. Check out the programme: https://lnkd.in/evFNBuxD https://lnkd.in/eDdikPYH @fnr.lu @science_lu #ResearchersDays

LCSB on Tour: learn about the fascinating world of the #microbiome and its impact on our health! Don't miss our next lecture! 🗓️ Date & time: 27 November - 7 PM 📍Venue: Trifolion Echternach 🇱🇺 Language: Luxemburgish 🔬 In this lecture, Prof. Paul Wilmes, will discuss the influence that the microbiome can have on health and disease and present examples from current research studies, such as how the type of birth influences the development of the microbiome in infants and how the combination of microbes and diet can influence the development of colon cancer and Parkinson’s disease. He will further explain what the microbiome can tell us about the early stages of neurodegenerative diseases, and how we can influence the microbiome to stay healthy. 👉 More information and registration here: https://lnkd.in/efvR72CN University of Luxembourg
