🏆🎉 NEAMO, a student team from Rīgas Tehniskā universitāte (Riga Technical University), has won 1st place in the EIT Food category at the EIT Jumpstarter program: a pan-European pre-accelerator for early-stage innovators addressing global challenges in food, energy, health, and more. Out of 600 applicants, only 180 teams advanced to the intensive training phase, which culminated in the final event in Budapest. Forty-nine teams from 21 countries competed across nine categories for a share of the €150,000 prize fund. 😎 By the way, this is the second year a team from Latvia has claimed first place in one of the categories. About NEAMO 🌊🐟: The team tackles a pressing issue in aquaculture: disease outbreaks in coastal fish farms, which cause 17% of fish mortality and significant financial losses, for example, €2 billion annually in the Norwegian salmon industry. NEAMO's innovative solution is an early warning system leveraging satellite data and advanced disease prediction models to help fish farms prevent outbreaks before they cause significant harm. This solution also helps prevent the overuse of antibiotics and reduces harmful practices that can damage marine ecosystems, contributing to the challenge of environmental sustainability in aquaculture. ⛓️🤝 With the support of EEA and Norway Grants, Latvian company AB METAL has invested nearly EUR 1 million in a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly, and energy-efficient production line. This innovative upgrade now enables stainless steel, aluminum, and other non-ferrous metals to be processed more sustainably, enhancing the company’s competitive edge in the market. 🌱 The technology line consists of two main components: ✴️ High-tech laser cutting machine. ✴️ Multi-stage grinding machine with an automatic feed system. The new laser-cutting machine uses only half the power of its predecessor while boosting production speed by an impressive four times. Additionally, AB Metal can now process sheets up to 50 mm thick, compared to the previous limit of 25 mm, greatly enhancing the company's productivity. A successful collaboration with Norwegian partner ACMOTECH AS played a crucial role in this project. Their guidance in monitoring and achieving energy-efficiency targets ensured that every phase adhered to the highest quality and sustainability standards.
