Anyone other than law enforcement was allowed to surrender firearms in exchange for money as part of ongoing efforts to get guns off the street this summer.

The January sentencing was thought to be the end of the ordeal, and Borgen said at the time that he hoped to “kind of take a step back, take a deep breath and hopefully just push forward.”

“Nelson Counne used an expertly crafted persona and elaborate web of lies to convince women to hand over their savings,” Manhattan district attorney Alvin L. Bragg said in the statement. “At least five women were conned into pouring money into his supposed investment opportunities — while unknowingly helping him to repay previous victims and lure in new ones.” Although the origins of his scamming predated dating apps, he apparently later began using them to meet women. According to The New Yorker, one of his victims met him Our Time, a dating site for older folks.

"These defendants allegedly coordinated and enacted a gunpoint robbery that led to the death of Tobias Savice, a good-spirited family man," Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg said in a statement. "Although Mr. Savice remained strong on his road towards recovery, he sadly succumbed to the effects of his injuries."
