💡 With USAID support, Moldova is closer to a sustainable and secure energy future! ⚡USAID, through its Moldova Energy Security Activity (MESA), and the Moldovan Ministry of Energy are launching the first stage of procurement for up to 75 MW of a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) and 22 MW of internal combustion engines (ICE) capacity. 🔋 Project’s 1st stage objective: to install a 30 MW component at CET-Nord in Balti city.  📅 End of project: September 2026. The installment of the BESS will help: ✅ Improve grid stability and reliability; ✅ Facilitate energy trade with Romania, Ukraine, and Europe; ✅ Integrate more domestically produced renewable energy; ✅ Help Moldelectrica operator maintain flexibility and stability as electricity demand fluctuates. The procurement and installation of the BESS is possible due to $85 million in funding from USAID. The announcement was made during the visit of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Chisinau in May 2024, and is part of the total assistance of over $300 million allocated by the US in order to strengthen Moldova’s energy security under the #MoldovaConectata initiative. #MoldovaConectata aims to advance Moldova’s physical and market integration with Europe, increase domestic renewable energy generation, and strengthen Moldova’s energy independence. • On January 15, USAID Moldova Mission Director John Allelo and Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova Dorin Recean, signed a joint statement related to the new Amendment to the Development Objective Grant Agreement (DOAG), that will offer Moldova $71 million in grant assistance funds. Out of these funds, $6 million will be used to improve cyber resilience within Moldova’s government and civilian agencies. This assistance includes cyber knowledge sharing, cyber skills training, and critical infrastructure operators to respond to, recover from, and protect against cyber attacks. At the same time, $15 million will represent technical assistance for enhancing Moldova’s trade and border crossing capacity. These activities include constructing extended parking areas for trucks near the border to facilitate Border Queuing Management, procuring equipment, and providing technical assistance for the development of the Beresti multimodal logistics center. Another $50 million will support the development of improved transportation infrastructure for vehicles and people to enhance trade and economic cooperation between Ukraine and Moldova. USAID is proud of the cooperation with the Government of Moldova / Guvernul Republicii Moldova , in order to support the projects aimed at improving the quality of life for the people of Moldova, while providing increased opportunities, jobs, and a better future. #USAIDMoldova #USAIDMoldovaProjects

  • On January 14, in a virtual ceremony uniting Washington, Chisinau and other countries, USAID Administrator Samantha Power swore in John Allelo as the new mission director of USAID Moldova. Mr. Allelo most recently served as mission director for USAID Armenia, where he oversaw programs focused on economic development, strengthening democratic institutions, and enhancing resilience. His extensive career includes key leadership roles in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Colombia, Kosovo, South Sudan, and Bulgaria, where he supervised initiatives addressing critical global challenges. Mr. Allelo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Louisiana State University, a Law degree from Tulane University, and a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the Air War College. Our team is excited to introduce Mr. Allelo to our partners in Moldova, and to highlight our achievements in democracy and governance, economic growth, and energy security. Under the leadership of Mr. Allelo we will continue to strengthen these partnerships, contributing to creating more opportunities for the people of Moldova in order to improve their lives and to ensure a bright and European future for Moldova. #USAIDMoldova #USAIDMoldovaProjects

  • #Remembering2024 Dear friends, let’s take a look at the successes we achieved together with our partners in Moldova in 2024. In May, State Secretary Antony Blinken visited Moldova expressing a commitment of up to $85 million through USAID aimed at strengthening Moldova’s energy sector. This funding is part of the $300 million in assistance to Moldova’s energy sector previously announced by the U.S. Government. With this investment, USAID will procure and install high-tech equipment to strengthen Moldova’s national power grid and facilitate increased electricity trade with Romania, Ukraine, and the European market. A new large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) and additional equipment will improve the reliability of Moldova’s power grid and contribute to the efficient management of energy reserves and demand fluctuations, and the integration and expansion of renewable energy capacities. USAID continues to cooperate with the Government of Moldova and other international donors in order to support the energy sector’s institutions in addressing the new challenges of the sector and strengthening Moldova's energy independence and security. #USAIDMoldova #USAIDMoldovaProjects #MoldovaEnergySecurity

  • The United States, through USAID, provides support for Moldova’s cybersecurity sector by improving digital skills, donating equipment, and preparing the workforce for cybersecurity challenges. One of these areas is support to the National Institute of Innovations in Cybersecurity "Cybercor". Last week, U.S. Senator Christopher Coons visited Cybercor in order to see firsthand how USAID assistance is strengthening Moldova’s cybersecurity. During the tour, members of the delegation discussed the cybersecurity challenges faced by Moldova and focused on training needs for both cyber professionals and employees of public institutions. The delegation toured the training rooms and high-performance labs where Cybercor is able to simulate cybersecurity scenarios during training sessions. Cybercor was launched in 2024 with USAID’s assistance and additional support from Sweden and the UK. It represents successful partnership between the private and public sectors of Moldova, in collaboration with the Technical University of Moldova (Universitatea Tehnică a Moldovei). • #Remembering2024 Dear friends, let’s take a look at the successes we achieved together with our partners in Moldova in 2024. In April, USAID Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman signed the Memorandum of Understanding between USAID and the Government of the Republic of Moldova for the construction of a 400kV high-voltage line, which will interconnect the power systems of the Republic of Moldova and Romania, as well as with the European power system. The overhead power line, with an estimated length of 190 kilometers, will connect Moldova's Straseni power stations with Romania’s Gutinas power station. USAID supports strengthening the energy security of the Republic of Moldova, which is vital for economic growth, social well-being, European integration, and independence from malign influences. #USAIDMoldova #USAIDMoldovaProjects #EnergySecurity

  • #Remembering2024 Dear friends, let’s take a look at the successes we achieved together with our partners in Moldova in 2024. This year, we had the second Young Professionals Internship Program called “Powering Moldova’s Future”. Over six months, 30 young graduates in the fields of engineering, economics, law, communication and IT benefited from paid internships in the public and private companies in Moldova’s energy sector. After successfully completing the internship, 86% of interns were hired by the companies where they interned. This paid internship program is supported by USAID and the British Embassy in Chisinau and implemented by USAID’s Moldova Energy Security Activity (MESA). The program aims to strengthen human capital and reduce labor shortages in the sector. #USAIDMoldova #USAIDMoldovaProjects #EnergySectorInternship

  • #Remembering2024 Dear friends, let’s take a look at the successes we achieved together with our partners in Moldova in 2024. In February, we welcomed four more courts to the USAID Model Court Project. Courts in Drochia, Hincesti, Straseni, and Criuleni have committed to achieving model court status within the next two and a half years. These courts will benefit from the Project’s support to improve the efficiency and quality of their work in line with the standards of the International Judicial Excellence Framework and the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice. The USAID Model Court Project aims to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of courts in the Republic of Moldova by implementing new strategies for managing the activity of courts, analyzing their performance, digitalizing work processes, and institutionalizing the concept of user-friendly courts. #USAIDMoldova #USAIDMoldovaProjects #ModelCourtInitiative
