The Landscape Fire Management in the Western Balkans (LFMWB) is a project financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation – SDC and coordinated by Farmahem from Skopje, North Macedonia with backstopping support from Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation from Switzerland. The first phase is designed to be implemented in the period from 01.02.2022 until 31.12.2026. The LFMWB Programme is dedicated to achieving the overarching goal of enhancing the resilience of Western Balkan forests and landscapes against fires, benefiting the communities relying on these areas for their livelihoods and socio-economic development. This goal is in line with the SDC's Framework strategic components, namely Climate-resilient development and Sustainable management of natural resources. To accomplish this, the Programme focuses on three key outcomes: 1. Better cooperation: Establishing a sustainable regional network that facilitates cross-boundary knowledge exchange and cooperation in landscape fire management (LFM). 2. Better capacities: Strengthening capacities in broader LFM approaches to enable effective cross-sectoral collaboration at multiple levels. 3. Better policies: Implementing revised policies and strategies on LFM to promote sustainable landscape management at local, national, and regional levels, fostering cross-sectoral collaboration and involving communities and key stakeholders in the development processes. By creating national and regional networks for LFM, the Programme aims to initiate multi-stakeholder policy dialogues, foster better cooperation, and enhance capacities throughout the Western Balkans region. Additionally, the Programme actively promotes the integration of LFM into climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies, recognizing its crucial role in building resilience and sustainability.

👩🏫 Landscape Fire Management (LFM) represents a holistic approach, which takes into account ecological, social, and economic factors. It ensures fire resilience of the landscape and livelihoods that people are dependent on. The LFM integrates fire prevention, risk assessment, and landscape approach. LFM refers to practices aimed at preventing, controlling, and mitigating the impacts of landscape fires on ecosystems, communities, and properties. 🔥 A landscape fire is an uncontrolled fire that spreads rapidly across various types of vegetation and landscapes, such as forests, grasslands, and shrublands. These fires can occur naturally or be caused by human activities and can result in significant ecological damage, loss of property, and threats to human safety. They often occur in dry, hot conditions and can be influenced by factors such as wind, topography, and moisture levels in the vegetation. #lfmwb #landscape #fire #management #western #balkans

🔥 Landscape fires have been a significant environmental concern for North Macedonia over the past two decades, with landscape fires posing a major threat to its forests and natural resources. Between 2000 and 2021, the country experienced 4,811 forest fires, which led to the destruction of over 201,121 hectares of land. These fires have had serious environmental impacts, including the loss of around 2,495,835 cubic meters of forest growing stock. The causes of these fires are diverse, but a majority are human-induced, reflecting global trends where 70-90% of landscape fires stem from human activities. These activities include urbanization, land-use changes, and agricultural expansion. Unintentional human actions, such as discarded cigarettes or mishandled campfires, as well as intentional actions like land clearing, also play a role. Moreover, climate change is exacerbating the frequency and severity of fires. Rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and shifting precipitation patterns have made regions like the Mediterranean, including North Macedonia, more prone to landscape fires. Regional variations in the intensity of fires are significant within the country. For instance, the Southeastern region frequently experiences extensive fires, with high levels of damage recorded in the Eastern and Southwestern regions during specific years. The severity of these fires fluctuates, depending on environmental conditions and human activity. One of the key systems in place is the Macedonian Forest Fire Information System (MAKFFIS), which serves as a tool for monitoring and assessing fire risks. To address the challenge of landscape fires in North Macedonia, a Landscape Fire Management (LFM) Report and a national gap analysis were developed within the framework of the LFMWB Programme in a participatory manner with LFM stakeholders. Moreover, the National LFM Network is working on creating an LFM strategy. The LFMWB aims to address LFM across various levels of governance within the country, by identifying the roles and influences of all key stakeholders, from local communities to the highest institutions. This approach provides a broad foundation for effective LFM. #lfmwb #landscape #fire #management #western #balkans

🔥 Personal responsibility plays a major role in preventing and managing landscape fires, as many fires are ignited by human activities. Individuals must take specific actions to reduce fire risks, especially in fire-prone areas. For instance, people should avoid careless behaviors like discarding lit cigarettes, leaving campfires unattended, or using machinery that can spark in dry conditions. Farmers can adopt safer agricultural practices, such as avoiding slash-and-burn agriculture or using controlled burns with proper precautions. 👨🌾 Property owners in rural and forested regions can also play a vital role in landscape fire prevention by maintaining defensible space around homes and infrastructure. This includes clearing flammable vegetation, creating firebreaks and ensuring access to firefighting services. Following local fire regulations and participating in community education and training programmes about fire risks and prevention are other critical responsibilities individuals can embrace. 🌳 The Landscape Fire Management in the Western Balkans Programme emphasizes community involvement and individual responsibility, encouraging citizens to engage in sustainable land management and landscape fire prevention activities. Public awareness campaigns, supported by this Programme, promote responsible behaviors and increase understanding of landscape fire risks. Engaging in these efforts ensures that individuals and communities are more resilient to landscape fires, helping to reduce both the likelihood and impact of future fires. #lfmwb #landscape #fire #management #western #balkans
