🎉 MEF Wishes You All a Happy New Year! 🎉 2024 has been a year of incredible achievements and successes for our amazing grant partners – including the Malta Ranger Unit (MRU)! 🙌🌍 The Malta Ranger Unit (VO/2443) is a passionate Voluntary Organisation on a mission to empower citizens to protect the environment 🌿 through education, crime prevention, and monitoring environmental illegalities 🛑. In 2024, MEF was proud to award MRU a grant for a 6-month project designed to help them carry out their duties safely and efficiently. The results are impressive! 💪 🚗 Grant Details: Organisation: Malta Ranger Unit Project Duration: May 2024 - November 2024 Grant Amount: €9,500 🔧 What the grant achieved: 1️⃣ More Clean-Ups! Thanks to the grant, MRU was able to transport necessary equipment 🛠️ and immediately remove litter, reducing both land and sea pollution 🌊. No more waiting for contractors – the Rangers are on it! 🚮✨ 2️⃣ Wider Patrol Coverage! The new vehicle 🚙 allows the Rangers to reach more areas more quickly, enabling them to respond to environmental illegalities in record time ⏱️. Plus, previously inaccessible areas are now getting regular visits! 🌍👀 3️⃣ Expanding the Volunteer Program 🙋♀️🙋♂️ Volunteers across Malta and Gozo are getting involved and making a difference! ACT - Malta was created in 2018 by a group of friends who wanted to create positive change and a better future for communities and the natural environment in Malta. 🎉The NGO was awarded a grant by MEF in 2023 for a project of 1 year. This grant period has come to an end and we are happy to see that the results of the grant have really helped ACT in their inspirational mission to protect Maltese trees and shrubs whose unique genetics can only be found locally and nowhere else in the world. Project name: ACT Malta Project duration: September 2023 - September 2024 Grant amount: €10,000 👇Deliverables: ✅Improvement in environmental conditions of plant nursery - A shade cloth, irrigation system and electricity were installed before the summer of 2024 which reduced heat stress on plants and trees and led to increased survival rates and faster growth. This also created more time for ACT’s nursery manager to dedicate to other required tasks like seed collection, propagation and repotting. ✅Procurement of compost & larger pots - 800 trees were re-potted into larger pots and it is estimated that approximately 3000 trees and shrubs were grown in total! ✅Increase social media outreach & help promote MEF - ACT promoted their work through stories and posts on Facebook and Instagram, procured an MEF banner to hang in the nursery and tagged MEF in posts. 👉ACT Malta sell plants and trees to the general public and also run regular volunteer sessions at their Nursery in Wardija. 📢New Grant Partnership! 🎉Malta Environment Foundation is delighted to be partnering with Saviour Bonnici, the Director and Producer of ‘Natura Maltija’. 🌺‘Natura Maltija’ is a professional documentary series dedicated to showcasing the unique natural heritage of Malta. It explores the diverse ecosystems and wildlife found locally, offering a unique perspective on Malta’s rich biodiversity and shedding light on the importance of preserving these natural treasures. 📺Documentaries are a great tool to bring about change in society and one of the key objectives of ‘Natura Maltija’ is to instil positive feelings of appreciation towards the natural environment, since for real change to happen, people must first understand and believe that what we have deserves to be protected. 💚The Malta Environment Foundation is proud to be supporting Mr Bonnici in his latest endeavour to create online versions of ‘Natura Maltija’, include English translations and make it more easily and permanently accessible to as many people as possible. Today is the International Day of Climate Action. Community energy, or citizen owned renewable energy projects, can play a key role in decarbonising and democratising our energy system! ☀ One of our grant partners, Friends of the Earth Malta, is working on a scoping study to prepare the ground for Malta's first renewable energy community in the 'People Power Up' project. 💪 As part of their research, they met up with a Renewable Energy Community from the island of Menorca, the COURE energy cooperative, to take inspiration from their experiences and learn valuable lessons for setting up similar initiatives in Malta. Rota are pedalling towards sustainable solutions! Rota are one of our grant partners and they advocate for safe bicycle use in Malta. They bought a cargo e-bike thanks to the grant that the Malta Environment Foundation awarded them. They have shown it to a few people at some recent events who have tested it out and it seems to be quite popular! The Malta Environment Foundation is very proud to have supported SharkLab Malta in enabling them to run an incredibly informative and interactive workshop about Bull Rays last weekend with various attendees representing interested organisations and individuals from environmental NGOs, environmental authorities, ranger units, marine tourism operators, divers and fishermen. Questions were asked of attendees including 'What should the legal protection of Bull Rays consist of?' and 'How can we best safeguard key marine areas that are critical to the species?' Many solutions were brainstormed and will be fed back into a second workshop to which local government authorities will be invited to enable them to contribute to actioning protecting this critically endangered species.
