Céline Dion is so synonymous with big-stage spectacle that it’s easy to forget how captivating a vocalist she can be in a more stripped-down setting. Featuring an all-French repertoire, the intimate Encore un soir was recorded around the time her husband passed away, and even its most ascendant moments—like the acoustic-to-anthemic title track—are shaded by melancholy. Likewise, the cover of Québécois icon Robert Charlebois’ “Ordinaire” may build into a stormy, symphonic climax, but its most striking quality is Dion’s disarmingly raw performance.
