About Big Mountain

Big Mountain frontman Joaquin “Quino” McWhinney was introduced to Latin music by his maternal grandfather and uncles, who played conjunto, corrido, and mariachi gigs in Southern California. ∙ Quino fell in love with reggae in his early teens after seeing a profile of Bob Marley on 60 Minutes. ∙ Originally called Shiloh, the band renamed themselves after playing a benefit show in Arizona for local indigenous tribes whose sacred Big Mountain site was under threat by strip-mining interests. ∙ When soundtrack coordinator Ron Fair heard “Touch My Light” on the radio, he asked Big Mountain to record a version of Peter Frampton’s hit “Baby, I Love Your Way” for the film Reality Bites. ∙ Big Mountain’s cover of “Baby, I Love Your Way” reached the Top 10 in 18 countries.
