Two jail stints haven't slowed the hectic lifestyle and rising profile of spitfire dancehall singer Busy Signal. He turned those experiences into the 2007 single “Jail”, built on nyabinghi and nylon strings. His albums—and collaborations with the likes of No Doubt and M.I.A.—reflect a similar blend of rough and smooth, sometimes on the same cut. He's alternately gruff and nice with the hook on the raucous thump of Major Lazer's “Watch Out For This (Bumaye)”. And in twisting The Commodores' “Nightshift” into the slow jam “Smooth Love”, Busy Signal slyly turns the solemn into the sensuous.
