Os Mutantes’ third release marks a distinct move into pure psychedelic rock, jettisoning the more overtly Brazilian elements of their previous albums. Guitarist Sérgio Dias channels Jimi Hendrix’s feedback and distortion on the opening track, “Ando Meio Desligado”, while the six-minute “Meu Refrigerador não Funciona” (literal translation: “My Refrigerator Will Not Work”) is an extended workout for electric organ and Rita Lee’s wild freeform vocals. Elsewhere, “Quem Tem Medo de Brincar de Amor” is packed with arresting hooks and “Desculpe, Babe” features one of the band’s most instantly catchy melodies. Decades after its release, A Divina Comédia ou Ando Meio Desligado can still surprise listeners with each listen.
