Dan Mangan’s 2022 Juno-nominated/Polaris-shortlisted album Being Somewhere was a pure product of the pandemic, its hermetic origins reflected in the album’s tightly wound fusion of tender-hearted songcraft and experimental beat science. But this companion release is all about getting back out into the world. Inspired by the compilation CDs he used to burn for his wife to play on her car stereo back in the mid-2000s, Being Elsewhere Mix is a freewheeling collection of stray tracks that epitomises Mangan’s ceaseless quest for reinvention. The suave sophisti-pop of new song “Call Me Up High” butts up against a fragile, bedroom-folk rendition of Damien Jurado’s “A.M. AM”, while a roadhouse-ready cover of Bob Dylan’s shitkickin’ classic “Maggie’s Farm” clears the way for an intimate, acoustic reworking of Being Somewhere’s funky-grooved standout “Fire Escape”. The breadth of Mangan’s artistry is perfectly encapsulated by the two versions of the album’s flagship single “Find New Ways”. presented here as both a horsewhipped heartland-rock epic and as a stripped-down—but no less dramatic—campfire confessional.
