Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy team up with lyricist Gulzar on a stirring set of tunes for filmmaker Meghna Gulzar’s true-story spy thriller Raazi, set during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. A meditation on patriotic duty and survival, the album slow-builds a sense of the epic in two versions of “Ae Watan”—which first arrives amid swelling strings and the soaring vocals of Arijit Singh, and later in a folksier style with Sunidhi Chauhan and a children’s chorus. The wedding track “Dilbaro” deepens the four-track album’s emotional power with a heart-tugging rubab line and acoustic arrangements, and Singh appears again with a virtuosic vocal performance on the title track—starting with a subtle folk melody line that builds on layers of sarangi, percussion and Sufi choruses to a passionate crescendo.
