Worst Behaviour are holding down the gqom genre, ensuring its relevance into the 2020s as it faces steep competition from amapiano as the sound of South African nightlife. The duo, consisting of club DJs/producers Pex (Vukani Buthelezi) and Boi Again (Mfanafuthi Buthelezi), formed in Durban township Inanda, the city where gqom was born and continues to thrive. Worst Behaviour’s breakout single, “Samba Ngolayini”, featuring Gento Bareto and internationally recognised gqom pioneer DJ Lag, caught fire in the streets upon its release in 2020. Spoiled for choice, the duo enlisted the dreamy combination of DJ Tira, Okmalumkoolkat, Tipcee and Beast—all artists at the forefront of the Durban music scene—for a remix that introduced them to the rest of South Africa in 2021 and further cemented their reputation as gqom innovators.
