CYRIL Essentials

Time and time again, Darwin producer Cyril Riley has proven just how adeptly he can transform nostalgic artefacts into fun new playthings. Case in point: his smash 2023 remix of “Stumblin’ In”, a 1978 soft-rock duet between England’s Chris Norman and America’s Suzi Quatro. As unlikely as it might seem to be able to pluck a forgotten gem from 45 years before and reframe it to achieve platinum (and even higher) sales in multiple countries, such musical sleight of hand is exactly what Riley does best. He has even recast Disturbed’s own ferocious overhaul of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” into an oddly soothing club banger. Riley has also tapped guest vocalists to help him find new emotional depth in familiar favourites, with Dean Lewis helming Crowded House’s “Fall at Your Feet” and Kita Alexander reimagining Spandau Ballet’s “True”. And when maryjo helps him turn Paramore’s anxious power-pop valentine “Still into You” into a skittering dance-pop earworm a decade later, it’s clear the possibilities are endless for his spirited tinkering.
