DMA'S Essentials

DMA’S may have formed in the inner Sydney suburb of Newtown in 2012, but the trio’s sound owes a debt to the northern English city of Manchester. While the band’s melange of happy-sad melodies, plaintive acoustic strumming and contemplative vocals is as timeless as it is geographically borderless (which explains why their makeovers of Cher’s “Believe” and Madonna’s “Beautiful Stranger” slip so easily into their repertoire), early singles such as “Delete” and “Lay Down” carry the undeniable scent of the Gallagher brothers, not least in frontman Tommy O’Dell’s vocal delivery. As their career has progressed, however, the Oasis influence has become less pronounced, though the spectre of Manchester—specifically, its late-’80s Haçienda heyday—still resonates in the dance beats and glimmering synths of “Life Is a Game of Changing”.
