DJ, remixer and producer Tino Piontek’s stage moniker is no red herring. Weaned on a childhood diet of his father’s soul, classic house and—yes—disco records, the Dresden-born dance music innovator brings a light touch and a nostalgic ear to the wobbling, rump-shaking grooves that have been his signature since 2009. No sample is too audacious (see “Rapper’s Delight” recut “Move or Not”), and whole ’80s-era block parties are conjured with just a stuttering groove and a twanging guitar line (especially on “Body Funk” from the 2017 album Soulmatic) as Piontek pays his dues in the most ebullient way imaginable.
