Mick Hucknall has a remarkable soul voice, one of Britain's best. Since the early ‘80s, his band Simply Red have made fine use of that pleading, cocksure purr, first placing it within urgent, politically savvy funk and classic torch balladry, like “Money's Too Tight (To Mention)” and the classic “Holding Back the Years”, and then finding warmer climes in the beatific jazz of “Stars”. They even dallied with Latin rhythms, particularly in the tango verses for “A New Flame” and the house-inflected disco of “Something Got Me Started”.
