Formed in 1982 in London, The Pogues fused traditional Irish music with the sound and attitude of punk. This revolutionary blend brought chart and critical success for the Shane MacGowan-fronted outfit with 1985's Rum Sodomy & the Lash, produced by Elvis Costello, and the perennially popular "Fairytale of New York" (recorded with Kirsty MacColl) being highlights. Beset by line-up changes, The Pogues called it quits in 1996, but after reassembling for a 2001 Christmas tour, they officially reformed.
