The Woman King

Set in 1823 in Dahomey, (now known as Benin), the film The Woman King tells the story of the leader of an all-female army of warriors known as the Agojie. The movie tells real-life history through the lense of two fictional characters, Nanisca (played by Viola Davis), an Agojie commander, and Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), the group’s newest recruit. Tackling the reign of King Ghezo and the involvement of the rival Oyo empire in the Atlantic slave trade, The Woman King (directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood) tells the story of unbreakable courage and the power of womanhood. Here, you’ll find a collection of tracks from Africa and beyond that drive the motivation and energy of the film home.
