Every Shade of Blue

Every Shade of Blue

The Head and the Heart follow 2019’s Living Mirage with Every Shade of Blue, a loosely conceptual album exploring the broad spectrum of human emotion. No strangers to writing highly emotive songs, the Seattle-born band employs the heartfelt vulnerability of early hits like “Lost in My Mind” and “Rivers and Roads” in service of introspection, making for some of the outfit’s most interesting songwriting. “Hurts But It Goes Away” pairs a chipper stomp with a hopeful sense of skepticism, with a relatable chorus refrain: “Tell me that I’m gonna be okay.” “Tiebreaker,” one of the album’s poppier moments, offers a nuanced take on a love song. And the title track explores mortality and connection in frank terms, with a sound that recalls the band’s earlier, rootsier work.
