A far cry from Andy Stott’s full-force techno of a few years prior, 2011’s Passed Me By could be mistaken for a beaten-up record on a broken turntable spinning at half-speed. Only the quick-stepping “Dark Details” projects bass music’s coiled energy; everything else is dead slow and bathed in vinyl hiss. “New Ground” wreaths bit-crushed drums in silvery sampled vocals; “North to South” is a tangle of battered metal and moans—part ambient, part car wreck. This is as apocalyptic as techno gets.
