Joey Bada$$ may have been Pro Era’s breakout artist, but over the years the Brooklyn crew’s co-founder CJ Fly proved one never to be underestimated. Produced entirely by Statik Selektah, a longtime associate of the group and one of hip-hop’s most consistent boom-bap contemporaries, RUDEBWOY presents the rapper at his most personal and transparent, telling autobiographical tales of a complicated childhood and how they shaped the man he became. On the jazzy “BARRELL,” he shares a traumatic incident with authorities that solidified a distrust for the police that remains in his adult life. He plays the part of an urban tour guide on “Show You,” framing locales by their significance to his upbringing and warning outsiders of where they should fear to tread. As the title suggests, his Jamaican heritage manifests throughout this baker’s dozen, but CJ still makes time for Buffalo rapper Conway the Machine on the brick-cold give-and-take “City We From.”
