Tennessee is a complement to 2001’s Bright Flight, where this EP’s title track originated. It’s the song most emblematic of David Berman’s life changes at the time, with a drawling delivery and saloon-door sway indicative of the indie-rock bard’s relocation to Nashville; not only do the lyrics reference getting married, but he gets his wife, Cassie, to sing some of them. And while “Long Long Gone” may reinforce the Silver Jews’ formative Pavement connections, the brassy gospel chorus is pure Southern comfort.
