Essential Albums
- Celebrating the sharp-dressing, wild-living pachuco subculture, Maldita Vecindad brought crazy rhythms and wailing sax to the rock en español movement. That bravado is abundantly represented in their sound here—from shouted vocal choruses to high-stepping horns and frantic rhythms. But pumping basslines are their secret weapon: When not shaking it to the deep reggae of "Toño," the punkish "Crudelia," or the hyper-speed ska of "Pachuco," they kick out old-fashioned Latin pop on "Kumbala." And on "Mare," they practically invent flamenco funk.
- Recorded during the Falklands War and released in early 1983, Los Violadores’ debut makes clear their love for British punk from the very first chord, and a clear intention to take no prisoners. Raw, direct and rebellious, this album represents the first stone on which creole punk would later be built, with songs such as "Viejos Pateticos" and “Represion" having a lasting influence.

About Maldita Vecindad y Los Hijos del Quinto Patio
Latin rockers Maldita Vecindad y Los Hijos del Quinto Patio formed in Mexico City in 1985; comprising vocalist Roco, guitarists El Pato and Sax, bassist Aldo, and drummer Pacho, the group debuted in 1988 with a self-titled LP which earned acclaim for its fusion of rock, ska, and Mexican folk sounds. El Circo, widely considered a classic in rock en español circles, followed in 1991, selling an astounding 600,000 in Maldita Vecindad's native land; around the same time, they appeared in Gift, a film directed by Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell. After En Vivo Gira Pata de Perro, the group recorded a 1994 LP with producer Bill Laswell which remains unreleased; instead, they resurfaced two years later with Baile de MasCaras, followed in 1998 by Mostros. ~ Jason Ankeny
