French violinist Renaud Capuçon and Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili first played together at pianist Martha Argerich’s Lugano Festival in Switzerland in 2012. It was their collaboration there on the Franck Violin Sonata that convinced them to make this recording of music composed between 1886 and 1887. Capuçon and Buniatishvili are two of the most engaging and vibrant musicians performing today and are concert virtuosos in their own rights. Here, however, they also prove themselves to be exceptional chamber musicians. The intense romanticism of Franck’s Violin Sonata in A Major and Grieg’s darkly painted Violin Sonata No. 3 in C Minor suits these two extrovert characters brilliantly, each matching the other for sheer expressive ardour. Dvorák’s 4 Romantic Pieces are the perfect vehicles for the more lyrical side to these two wonderful musicians.
