“I find recording so relaxing,” Rose Gray tells Apple Music. “I go into a little world when I record, and I just want to stay there.” In this Apple Music Home Session, the singer-songwriter—whose blend of dance, house, pop and more made her one of 2022’s most thrilling breakout stars—invites us into that world and offers up two new versions of tracks that have punctuated her rise. “‘Cupid’ was my summer anthem moment,” she says. “I really enjoyed the task of reworking this gem with a more chill break. I selected ‘Last Song’ because it was the first release of my EP Synchronicity, and it holds a special place in my heart. I really enjoyed stripping this song back.” She also tries Baby D’s “Let Me Be Your Fantasy” on for size. “Why the hell not,” she says of her choice of cover. “I love [lead vocalist] Dee Galdes-Fearon, and I think our voices fall in the same place on those big notes. Rebuilding this banger was fun. I added some of my own inflections and reworked the outro. It’s such a tune, I didn’t want to move too far away from the original.” This session arrived at the end of a life-changing couple of years for Gray as an artist—years that have, of course, affected us all in different ways. What has she learned along the way? “Creatively, I find myself in spaces now that I never could have imagined for myself,” she says. “I’ve learnt to just go where my heart takes me.”
