Honey Dijon was born in Chicago but often says she was raised in New York; she moved in the late ’90s and immersed herself in the downtown club scene, where she fell in love with DJing and found community. (As a trans woman of colour, community was everything, she has said.) For Apple Music’s first-ever New Year’s Eve party, it felt only right to bring Dijon, who is now based in London, back to New York for an event celebrating some of house music’s biggest emissaries. “I [always] try to bring my culture and my sound,” she tells Apple Music. “I stand on so many incredible shoulders of Black queer people who have created house music, so I always like to teach, entertain and bring joy.” Her mix, which was recorded live at the party, finds subtle ways of taking the holiday into account. “A New Year’s Eve mix is a fresh start, we’re going into a new chapter,” she says. “So I try to bring that sense of lightness, freshness, joy, renewal and fun.”
