Frisell is an expert at painting tones. Responding to vintage images of Arkansas natives by photographer Mike Disfarmer, the guitarist uses melodies to evoke the rolling hills of a pastoral countryside on this album. Each tune captures a specific frame of mind while remaining rooted in Americana, like the solitary, acoustic melody of “Farmer” and the proto-minimalist arrangement of “Focus”. The songs stand on their own while also being part of a greater whole, just as individuals in a community retain their own quirks.
