Jon Langston may have released his debut EP, Runnin’ on Sunshine, in 2013, but 10 years later the Georgia native finally has a debut full-length as well as a decade’s worth of experience to back it up. An eclectic collection of pop-country sounds, the album blends modern production with throwback influences, taking cues from genre-bending contemporaries like HARDY and ’90s icons like Alan Jackson in equal measure. The title track pairs a hip-hop-influenced beat with brooding, image-rich lyrics, recalling Montevallo-era Sam Hunt, who, like Langston, left a football career to play music. “Day in the 90’s” is a playful but reverent celebration of one of country music’s favourite eras, calling out classic hits like Deana Carter’s “Strawberry Wine” and Jackson’s “Chattahoochee”. And Travis Denning joins Langston on another LP highlight, “I ain’t Country”, a hard-driving rocker proving Langston’s country bona fides. Langston is a co-writer on 11 of the album’s 14 tracks, with other notable co-writers including Jessi Alexander and Ben Hayslip.
