Live By the Words

By the time they released their 2014 debut album, Justice Crew had already scored a handful of multiplatinum singles and become the era’s signature Australian boy band. Several of those hits appear on Live by the Words, along with a fresh wave of radio smashes. “Boom Boom” is the biggest, combining a giddy dance pulse with a harder rhythmic edge informed by the Sydney group’s proud origins in the hip-hop dance scene. The track also nods to *NSYNC’s iconic “Bye Bye Bye” (as well as Nelly’s “Hot in Herre”) as a winking way of passing the torch. Justice Crew display a similar talent for alchemy when transforming the dusty standard “Que Sera” into a sing-along stadium triumph, punctuated by good vibes and rapping alike. As with their contemporaries—and Australian tourmates—One Direction, the well-oiled ensemble packs a wide range of stylistic potential. “I Love My Life” is centred on a beachy guitar strum, while “Best Night” hammers home a similar sense of self-affirmation via the head rush of EDM. This may be Justice Crew’s only album, but the members have remained visible in Australian pop culture. Lenny Pearce makes toddler-friendly techno, while his identical twin brother John has become an auxiliary member of The Wiggles. The others have once again invested themselves in dance in all forms, keeping up the kinetic energy that made Justice Crew even more dynamic than most boy bands.
