There aren’t many artists who pack out rooms and book major festival sets after releasing just two singles. Then again, there aren’t many artists like Baker Boy, a.k.a. Danzal Baker, a.k.a. the “fresh new prince” of Arnhem Land. Like the Milingimbi and Maningrida-raised rapper himself, the electrifying “Marryuna”—which features Baker’s cousin, songwriter Yirrmal—is full of pride, passion and hype. Seamlessly slipping between English and his native Yolngu Matha (he’s the first to rap in his Indigenous language), “Marryuna” (“to dance with no shame”) is a brilliant, infectious and incredibly welcome addition to modern Australian music.
