The lyrics tend towards world-weary optimism and, musically, it’s his most fully formed record: elegant folk-pop enhanced by dub, hip-hop, house and a richness encouraged by his producer, Elbow’s Craig Potter. Laced with beauty, majesty, anger and euphoria, “Planet Sizes” may even be the best four minutes of Mason’s enthrallingly maverick career.
