This mesmerising album features beautiful liturgical choral works by Josquin Des Prez and Tomás Luis de Victoria re-crafted for the intimate forces of solo voice and accompanying vihuela (a type of lute). Tenor John Potter’s aim is to show just how adaptable centuries-old music is—and how much of it would have been rewritten and shaped for available voices and instruments. To hear Victoria’s large-scale mass Missa Surge Propera in this way is to have it revealed once more in brand-new colours.
