Two things are readily apparent from the first listen to Tobe Nwigwe’s EP Momints. First, his rolodex is both thick and dynamic. Across the project are guest features from Pharrell, EARTHGANG, Chamillionaire, 2 Chainz, Royce da 5’9, moonlighting NBA superstar Damian Lillard (as Dame D.O.L.L.A.), David Michael Wyatt, CeeLo Green, and then also multiple appearances from his wife, Fat. The supporting cast—if you can call a lineup of established superstars a supporting cast—show up and show out for the rising Houston MC. Which leads us to the next point: Nwigwe’s wife, Fat, is a hell of a singer and MC in her own right. She appears on six of the project’s 11 songs and likely had an influence on more. Momints is a balanced and more comprehensive listen for her presence, which makes sense when you take into account how much the two of them seem to cherish the life they’ve made together, taking great pains to express, on record, the lengths they will go to protect it. (Texas is an open-carry state.) All of this says nothing of Nwigwe’s own talent as an MC, his flows teeming with the DNA of greats like André 3000, and bars about success (“Been Broke”), Blackness (“Catfish Blackened W/Grits”) and the type of energy he won’t tolerate in his life (“Head to Hades”).
