Lyan Paris aren’t the most obvious candidates for Toronto rap stardom—coming from a city synonymous with wealth-flaunting, self-mythologising MCs, Ryan Goulding and Luke Marshall look more like college kids in search of a kegger. But it’s not just their appearance that sets Lyan Paris apart from Toronto’s hip-hop cognoscenti: On their EP We’re Ok, the duo draw as much from the post-emo aesthetic of Lil Peep and the post-genre pop of Post Malone as the after-hours introspection of Drake. The opening title track instantly establishes the singular sweet/sour dynamic between Goulding’s gilded hooks and Marshall’s rugged flows, while “Problems” demonstrates how Lyan Paris’ melodic sensibility can brighten up even the most bitter break-up song. And on “No Hesitation”, they invite fellow Toronto rapper Anders to join them for a trap-tinged kiss-off to duplicitous lovers that could nonetheless double as the hip-grinding soundtrack to your next party hook-up.
