Ever since they met at Kenya’s National Theatre in 2012, Mordecai Mwini Kimeu, Wachira Gatama and guitarist Kenneth Muya have parlayed their capabilities for rhythmic cadences, poetic songwriting and scene-stealing vocal flourishes to become one of Kenya’s biggest musical draws as H_art the Band. There was the impressive breakthrough of “Uliza Kiatu” and the inspired introspection of Made in the Streets, which birthed hits like “Issa Vibe” and “Lover Lover”. On their 2022 album, the band swap the pensive feel of their earliest music for a more propulsive effort that beckons their audience to the dance floor. Party Time, recorded in a mix of Luo, English and Kenyan vernacular, is a maximal affair crafted to paint an image of celebration and evoke happiness. “Buss Down / Party Time” is a dancehall-meets-Afropop jam that beckons people to catch a vibe and let loose, while “Kelele” is a downright hyper-vivid anthem. Ten years into their career, H_art the Band reinvent themselves as party-starters.
