Released 10 years after his debut, Kool Keith’s 2006 LP Project Polaroid finds the idiosyncratic New York MC proving he has plenty of fuel left in the tank. Producer TOMC3’s bruising knuckleduster beats prove the perfect foil for Kool’s blunt syllables, with tracks like “Space 8000” combining the Bronx behemoth’s cutting flow with supervillain-style orchestration. Like any classic Keith release, Project Polaroid also exhibits the rapper’s abstract lyrics: “Midwestern Shoe Calhoun” hat-tips a “centimeter linguistic anti-archaeologist” over twisted guitars.
