With the help of producer Quincy Jones, jazz pianist Alfredo Rodriguez uses his native Cuba’s resplendent music as a springboard for dynamic worldly fusions. The man's nimble key-work mirrors his band’s zigzagging Latin rhythms, and blends fluidly with both the Mid-East tones of trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf (“Venga la Esperanza”) and the undulating trills of Indian singer Ganavya (“Tocororo”). Rodriguez reinvents classical standards, skips from passionate flamencos to twirling accordion-led tangos, and even dips into sensual jazz-funk with French-Cuban duo Ibeyi. Crisp chords and darting notes are the hyphens that hold it all together.
