Williams: Violin Concerto No. 2 & Selected Film Themes
Written for Anne-Sophie Mutter, this John Williams concerto is his most sophisticated—and arguably finest—to date. The pair had been making music together for a few years prior to this album’s release, and the Violin Concerto No. 2, fuelled by their friendship, has a big heart. Don’t expect the big tunes that make his film scores so powerful; instead, admire the craft and ambition. Cast in four movements, with a particularly haunting finale, the work plays to Mutter’s strengths and her love of jazz; her astounding technique and musicianship are on full display. The miniatures from the movies make for a delicious (and more familiar) bonus.
