About J.J. Fad
Though they registered only a brief blip in the history of hip-hop, female rap crew J.J. Fad (Just Jammin’ Fresh and Def) made indelible impressions with their one and only hit, 1988’s “Supersonic.” Helmed by the same Los Angeles-based production team that unleashed N.W.A.’s relentless gangsta rap on the masses (Dr. Dre, DJ Yella, and Arabian Prince), the song's youthful, pop-friendly mix of rap and electro bass beats garnered J.J. Fad a Grammy nomination, among the first for any rap group. Their debut album, titled after their hit song, made a strong impression on pop and R&B charts. But their follow-up, Not Just a Fad (1991), failed to live up to its title and the group quickly faded into obscurity. ~ Dave Shim
