About Kaiit
Bringing a fresh new perspective to neo-soul, Kaiit Bellamia Waup made a name for themself in Melbourne’s burgeoning jazz/soul scene thanks to assured vocal performances that unfold with conversational flow. Born in 1997 in Papua New Guinea and using only their first name (pronounced Ky-Yeet) as a performer, Kaiit alternately glided smoothly above and burrowed deep into the funky arrangements on their 2018 debut EP, Live From Her Room. No less than Jill Scott herself likened Kaiit to both Scott and fellow neo-soul icon Erykah Badu, and Kaiit soon proved well-deserving of such lofty comparisons with her ARIA-winning 2019 single “Miss Shiney”. Inspired by a nagging bout of writer’s block, the song became a self-fulfilling prophecy about overcoming self-doubt. A half-decade period of personal reflection followed before Kaiit announced a new creative era with 2024’s “Space” and the advent of their own record label, Big Sis Energy. Marrying the dusty snap of vintage soul with modern quirks and personal revelations, their work reliably showcases the songwriter’s fluid, often downright giddy vocal flourishes—and whatever anxieties might be bubbling away.
