The Bo Diddley beat is to rock 'n' roll as mortar is to a brick building. But not only did that immortal groove find its way into the works of younger generations of rockers, like The Stooges' slash-and-burn "1969" and the Pretenders' stormy, sensual "Cuban Slide", it even influenced Bo's fellow '50s pioneers, as borne out by Buddy Holly's punchy, percolating "Not Fade Away".
