Washington D.C.-born Kelela Mizanekristos made a splash with her ambitious 2013 mixtape, Cut 4 Me, which featured her sweet, soaring vocals atop sparse and moody bass tracks. Written with some of the UK’s hottest producers, most notably Bok Bok and Jam City, it helped define an era of alternative R&B. Kelela’s compelling style has persisted across subsequent releases like her critically acclaimed debut LP, 2017’s Take Me Apart, as well as high-profile collabs with fellow R&B auteur Solange and pop giants Gorillaz.
