Born in 1960, Delaware-raised pianist Matthew Shipp had the perfect storm of training, starting his piano studies at age six. Shipp would touch on everything from classical and rock to jazz; he studied with Dennis Sandole, who was a teacher of Coltrane's. Ever since, Shipp has turned out free-thinking, avant-garde tunes that flip the script on what jazz is. “Motherboxxx” reimagines expressionism as a caffeine-addled jazz panic attack, while the electronic glitches and intense groove of “Space Shipp” are legitimately out there. Shipp's solo tracks (“Summertime”) show off his acumen in pacing and texture.
